René Dufaure de Montmirail founded Olympique de Marseille in 1892 as a club participating in multiple sports. Rugby was, at first, the most important sport played by OM, but they expanded into soccer in 1902.
During the 1920s, Marseille established themselves as one of the French championship.
Eight years later, they won their first official Division 1 championship by beating out Sochaux on goal difference. During the 30s, Marseille also managed to bring home another two Coupe de titles. In the 1942-43 season, Marseille scored an incredible 100 goals in 30 matches and won another Coupe de .
Despite top all-time goalscorer Gunnar Andersson playing for the club during the 1950s, they suffered a decline. Marseille were runners-up in the 1954 Coupe de but were relegated for the first time in 1959.
After a forgettable period during most of the 60s, Marseille ended the decade with a 1969 Coupe de win. OM won back-to-back Ligue 1 titles in 1971 and 1972, and played in the European Cup in 1971-72 and 1972-73.
From 1976 to 1984, Marseille languished in the second division but returned to the top tier with a vengeance. President Bernard Tapie made aggressive gs to put Marseille on the footballing mountaintop.
One of the most incredible achievements in the Olympique de Marseille stats is four consecutive Ligue 1 titles, from 1989 to 1992. Marseille’s peak, though, came one season later. Basile Boli scored the winning goal vs. AC Milan as OM won their first and only Champions League title.
After a match-fixing scandal, Marseille were relegated and suffered a lengthy trophy drought. Marseille’s next big achievement was winning the league and Coupe de la Ligue double in 2010. Marseille went on to win the Coupe de la Ligue in 2011 and 2012 as well.
In 2021-22, a handful of shrewd loan gs led Marseille to a second-place finish. So, OM will be playing Champions League soccer from 2022-23. The Ligue 1 odds price Marseille at +1100 to win Ligue 1, the second-best odds of any team. Sound betting advice should note Marseille’s excellent 12-4-3 Ligue 1 road record in 2021-22.
